ontology of bug reporters
Benjamin Drieu wrote a great list of different types of bug reporters, all of which I've seen in the wild. I do need to make an addition to the list:
The drive-by patcher
This variety of patcher sends patches without sufficient explanation of the bugs they fix. Often easily recognised because the patches will frequently not be unified diffs. The patches will often fix whatever problem they had, while introducing lots of bugs for everyone else, so beware.
By the way my favorite bug report of today was verbal, and went something like "It stays dark when I turn on the computer.. I tried to do something to the whatchamacallit, but it doesn't work". This bug report was ignored. The followup, and I quote: "hi--not sure, except that I decided to press the Power button on the TV screen, which seemed to do the trick.."
