pirate
Here's a usage of the word "pirate" that was completly new to me:
But there's one thing very curious and unique about Doctorow that goes against all publishing wisdom: he pirates himself, with, apparently, the full consent of his publishers who would clearly like people buying his books instead of downloading them free.
(Markup mine.)
So piracy is no longer only boarding and plundering a ship on the high seas, nor is it selling cheap copies of CDs at a flea market, or even sharing copyrighted content on a peer-to-peer network. No, piracy now includes publishing one's own personally copyrighted work on the internet for free, if it's also available on dead trees. Inspired.
Perhaps what we're seeing here is the beginning of the end of any remaining negative connotation of the word "pirate".
Personally, I'm proud to be a pirate.
