I wonder -- how can I tell if my computer knows how to boot from a DVD, without having a bootable DVD handy?

Looking for a DVD logo on the drive is a good first approximation. Maybe a few early DVD drives can't boot from DVD, but I've never encountered one that couldn't.

The alpha/hppa/ia64 multi-arch cd is also worth considering if you have access to these architectures.
